Since Michelangelo's time, ceilings for the most part have been completely neglected by designers and interior decorators. Primarily for two reasons: One, there were few affordable options available; and two, the feeling was that any color or design on the ceiling would make the room darker, smaller or distract from the walls and furnishings.

Today decorators and designers are starting to recognize that maybe Michelangelo was several hundred years before his time when it came to ceiling décor. Astute designers consider the ceiling in any room to be the 'fifth wall' and can be tinted, textured and shaped to enhance the décor of every room.
